150. DIY Stone Veneer Molds - Plastic or Rubber
There are many different types of concrete stone veneer custom molds you can use to make stone veneer. Personally, I have used rubber, plastic, steel, and foam and even tested out a hybrid concrete mix that was poured into a natural Ice mold.
I will say one thing before I get into the different types of molds. It doesn't matter what type of material you make your custom molds out of, the main thing is that you use the right material. To say that rubber molds "are best" or that plastic molds are "the best" really makes no sense due to the simple fact that it all depends on the type of stone veneer you are making from the molds.
Rubber Stone Veneer Molds
Rubber molds will capture every single detail of the natural stone they were made from. There are many different types of rubbers that can be used and some rubbers are more durable than others. But all rubbers will create amazing stones since rubber molds start out as a liquid that hardens to the exact shape of the stones they were made from.
Plastic Molds
Among other endeavors my family owned a tile production tooling company while I was young, so we had a ton of custom molds layer around the plant. The first molds that I personally worked with were plastic molding ones and plastic Spanish tile molds. The slate tile molds lack the detail of the natural slate they were made from.
Also, plastic molds are not as forgiving during the remolding processes due to the fact. Since most rubber molds are softer than plastic molds, you will be able to demand your stones out of the custom molds even when they are wet.
Having to wait longer before you can pull your stones out of plastic molds means you will get less mold turn-over. Which means that you will get half the production tooling value of most rubber molds?
