208. Rapid prototyping technology.

Currently the use of layer manufacturing technology for rapid prototyping requires virtual sketches from computer-aided-design or sometimes cartoon modeling applications, transforms them into slim, electronic, horizontal cross-sections and then generates successive levels until the unit is finished. This task is known as a Wysiwyg system whereby the virtual design and also the actual prototype usually are nearly the same.

Using additive layer manufacturing, the equipment deciphers information coming from a Computer Animation Software sketching and sets down consecutive layers of liquid, powder, or sheet materials, and in this manner shapes the actual prototype originating from a sequence of cross sections.

The conventional data interface connecting CAD application and the devices will be the STL document format. An STL document conjures the shape of a part or set-up by means of triangular facets. Smaller facets create a superior quality surface.

Rapid prototyping is currently entering the area of rapid manufacturing. Fast fabrication is presumed by quite a few specialists to be the subsequent step of additive fabrication.
