42. How to create a physical prototype?

The first step in creating your physical prototype is to create a computer-aided design (CAD) file of your invention, with product dimensions and specifications. The CAD software is a sophisticated program used to create an exact model of your invention in three dimensions. Once complete, the CAD file contains all of the engineering and production tooling information used to produce a physical prototype. In addition, the CAD file will provide information that can be used for manufacturing purposes.

The second step is to use fabrication technology to create a physical prototype according to the digital data contained in the CAD file. The CAD data is downloaded into a prototype-printing machine, which uses the data to create an exact model of your invention.
