22. Prototyping - the 1st of many

Tomorrow I am excited to dive into the prototyping-centric portion of the class. There is nothing quite like actually seeing light bulb switch on in students' heads while they're building. Pretty sweet and beyond that, a powerful indicator that early rapid prototyping yields tremendous benefits.

So today I have got to scrounge for materials to use in tomorrow's activity. And this time i'll be prepared to take photos of each prototype the students build! My biggest regret from last time i did the class is that i was so concerned with everything going "well" that i completely forgot about lasting capture techniques. Yes, it's great that i can recall with great detail everything that the students did, but without digital/physical evidence, it's harder to tell their stories.

So I am also going to try to break prototyping down a bit more mindfully this time. i think i tried to cram too much into too little time (go figure!) last time, and i want to stretch the material out more to let concepts sink in. tomorrow will be all about early stage rapid prototyping its mindsets and techniques: staying flexible and fluid, using the materials around you, involving other people for those unexpected discoveries, and thank goodness i now have an arsenal of stories to tell! i think i might also try a "what would you do" type activity, as well, to get them thinking about analogous next steps in their projects. i'll give them a scenario that actually happened last year, and together we'll list all the different ways to proceed on. i like the idea of using one example project throughout the quarter, and i think i know which one i want to do! we'll see how it goes.
