Overloading the use with configuration settings and giving users a good number of knobs to twiddle carries for it the danger that users shall be overwhelmed with decisions. Federated search applications could be very complex and require orchestrating doing this together with a good number of outside providers. This leads to so many parameters that might be tweaked to alter performance.
