10. Why spend the money on a prototype?

As an inventor, you are often wearing many hats or any other fresh things. You are not only the inventor, but also part of the product development team, a manufacturer and often the sales force. ALL of these roles can benefit from having a physical prototype of your idea before you move into production tooling.

Prototypes will provide you with:

1) the opportunity to test for functionality, ensuring the design and fit is correct and also give the chance to make changes while the costs are still relatively low (work out the wrinkles)
2) a physical model of your idea that can be used for sales meetings, presentations (i.e. investors/bank), tradeshows and customer feedback prior to going to the expense of manufacturing
3) a packaging stand-in model to save time, while the real product is being produced
4) a model that will clearly communicate what your part will look like during the final stages of manufacturing to ensure accuracy (especially when being made over seas where language barriers often occur) especially when you can't be there yourself

Prototypes of your invention will help to stream-line costs, timelines and enable products to reach the marketplace at a faster rate.

Often inventors will find that their original idea will morph during the design stages as they learn what works best in reality and what their potential customers like or don't like about the product.
