201. Metal mold casting

In metal mold casting for prototypes, a stereolithography apparatus model is replicated as silicone rubber and utilized as a reusable master pattern for a single-use plaster mold. Metal mold casting is restricted to low-melt alloys such as aluminum and zinc.
A slurry is formed by mixing a plaster (usually gypsum or calcium sulfate), with talc, sand, asbestos, sodium silicate, and water. This slurry is sprayed on the polished surfaces of the halves of the pattern. In fewer than 15 minutes the slurry hardens to form the mold. The mold halves are extracted from the pattern and dried in an oven.
The mold halves are carefully assembled, along with the cores. The molten metal is then poured in the molds. After the metal cools sufficiently, the plaster is broken and the cores are cleansed.
